"Baba Yaga" Aspen Forest Stained Glass Panel
This beautiful copper-foiled stained glass piece was handmade by Tamara Goldsmith in her Portland, OR, studio.
This piece was made with a variety of different colors of stained glass. The eyes are made with glow-in-the-dark glass, and details in the "eyes" have been painted using a permanent stained glass paint.
Baba Yaga is popularized from Slavic folklore and translates as "grandmother witch". In Eastern European legends, she is a complex, contradictory character who serves as both a terrifying crone known to eat insolent children, as well as a mystical spiritual guide who is a wise sage guiding heroes in their quests. In modern feminism, she symbolizes the wild, independent, and wise older woman, not as possessing pure evil, but seen instead as an unpredictable trickster or force of nature.
She lives in a hut in the forest, resembling a ramshackle witch/house with chicken legs. It has been reinterpreted in Miyazaki's animated film, "Howl's Moving Castle," as a giant steampunk-style beast.
The piece measures about 12” X 20"
With the chain, it's about 19 inches from the top of the chain to the bottom of the piece.
60/40 lead/tin solder was used, thus special care is suggested when cleaning/handling suncatchers containing lead. Lead is only dangerous when inhaling lead dust or ingesting significant quantities over time. There is no health threat to owning a stained glass window containing lead.
All pieces are carefully wrapped to prevent breakage during domestic shipping.
